THE 100 GREATEST BOXERS OF ALL TIME

Raised within sight of the steel mills of his native Gary, Indiana, Zale alternately worked in the mills between the fights of his youth, forging his toughness and earning his nickname, "The Man of Steel." Fighting around the small clubs of Chicago, those cauldrons where ingots of greatness are cast, Zale became a fighter tipped with the fine line of steel, indestructible. The only credentials the local fight crowd asked was the ability to hit hard and to take it. And Tony Zale could do both.
