In
retirement, the embittered Turpin realized that he had frittered
away most of his ring earnings and owed significant back taxes
to the British government. Turpin found work in his manager's
scrap yard. Later, he and his second wife operated a small
transport cafe. Eventually he filed for bankruptcy.
On May 14, 1966, Turpin received a final demand from the tax
authorities for a settlement. His cafe also faced condemnation
to make room for a garage. On May 17, Turpin took his
seventeen-month-old daughter, Carmen, to an attic bedroom, shot
her, and then shot and killed himself. Carmen survived. |
