Rocky Marciano, the son of a poor
immigrant shoemaker from a village near Naples, was a
throwback fighter who would have flourished in a less
refined era. He relied on heart, durability, and raw power
to overcome his many technical shortcomings. His trainer,
a former bantamweight called Charlie Goldman, tried hard
to add skill to Marciano's savagery but had to settle
instead for capitalizing on his protege's formidable
natural assets.
Goldman recalled the first time he put the novice Marciano in
the sparring ring against an experienced professional: "He
was so awkward we just stood there and laughed. He didn't
stand right, he didn't throw a punch right, he didn't do
anything right. Then, all of a sudden, he throws a
roundhouse right and the big guy is out like a mackerel."
That terse account could serve, with only minor
adjustments, as a description of most of Marciano's 49
professional engagements. |
