Born: William Harrison
Dempsey
Heavyweight Champion 1919-26
A ferocious fighter and one of the "Roaring Twenties" most famous
personalities, Jack Dempsey embodied the spirit of a brash America
that still had frontiers and believed anything was possible. From
beginnings as an itinerant miner and fruit picker, Dempsey became a
roughneck Adonis who ruled the ring as heavyweight champ. He married a
Hollywood actress, cared enough about his appearance to have his flattened
nose rebuilt, and always gave fight fans a show to remember.
